Developers interested in “Telco 2.0” have a new platform option with a collaboration between Coghead and BT’s Web21c project. Coghead have a web-based application development system that allows “tech savvy businesspeople” to build apps without programming, using a system of drag-and-drop design tools and application templates. Venture-funded Coghead provide development tools, but also an application hosting environment with a fixed monthly fee, and the ability to scale as your business takes-off. This combination of easy platform and business flexibility Coghead say allows you to “Go Bedouin” with your apps.
BT’s Web21c project is a developer SDK that allows easy integration of BT’s core services into 3rd-party apps. It supports a range of services including call control, SMS, conferencing, location and presence. When Web21c was first launched it supported VB.NET and C#, but they soon moved to embrace Java, PHP and Python, in addition to publishing via WSDL (web services) for language-independent development.
With Coghead and BT collaborating, BT expands the range of application environments that can access their services. On the flipside, Coghead get an interesting beachhead in the area of telco mashups, since companies will be able to quickly prototype and launch apps with a telco component without developing any code.
