I have just been given a sneek preview of a new Facebook IM client that is going into beta this Friday. What I like about this Facebook app is there is nothing to download or install, no registration and best of all, all of your friends in Facebook can use it instantly.
I was told by a senior Yahoo! executive last year that they would never make Yahoo! IM an open protocol because it was not in their interest. They had already partnered with MSN and so why would they want to ever open the door to Google or other XMPP clients. Well if this IM application does take off, as I expect, then Yahoo! and MSN may have to reconsider their closed proprietary positions.
One of the best things I have observed about the Facebook effect in recent months is the fact that other companies are being forced to be more open and collaborative for fear they will simply be replaced by a Facebook app.
In the past few months OpenID, Oauth and Microformats such as XFN have certainly been adopted quicker than before. If you want an invite to this application please leave a comment request below.

Sam
Love the idea of the IM system. It is an essential app, even before FB insisted that we log in to see anything our friends are doing.
Would love to be part of the beta to give it a go.
Thanks
Paul
p.s. hope to see you at The Great Facebook Debate in a couple of weeks.

Invite please? Thanks much!!!
September 25th, 2007 at 10:36 pm
I’ve actually had some conversations with a Director level friend of mine at Yahoo, and while his domain is not in the IM app field, but advertising, the sense I got from him was that it all comes down to dollars and cents. If the Yahoo IM folks feel there are enough impression opportunities, they’ll jump into Facebook. They may not necessarily open up their service, but clearly they have the technology, and more importantly they have the hardware muscle to make something like IM work on Facebook. And this is exactly the thing to be wary of: does whomever is releasing an IM application on Facebook have the ability to scale it to the levels that a Popular application is going to require? Clearly, a Yahoo level company would.
That all said, I realize I am late to the invite request list, but I promise to seed any invites they give me back to this thread, if I can get one! (I know sounds suspiciously like, “I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today!”) (Wait, this is Tuesday, hmmmm!)

I covered a chat application back in June which plans on leveraging the Facebook social graph. The application which at the time was called “Airwaves” has changed names to “Fuze.” This new application has been hyped up as though it is the official Facebook chat application that also has an open API. The domain, FriendVox.com was registered yesterday by a company out of the UK called Techlightenment. Techlightenment is a Facebook development firm that has already released a dozen applications, including the wildly popular Bob Dylan application. This firm knows how to make awesome Facebook applications. The FriendVox Facebook IM application should be no exception. […]

I realize I’m really late with this, but like everyone else asked:
Can I get an invite? Please?!
Facebook is changing the world. Or at least, the social world on the internet. And I’m excited about it. If Facebook IM works out, I think it will be the biggest thing since Facebook Applications. (Which were the biggest thing since the News Feed.)
Mark Zuckerberg would be crazy to sell Facebook now. He needs to take it public eventually.

Sam, would love an invite if you are still offering them. I’ve experimented with a couple of the other IM apps for Facebook, but they seem to require all the users to login to an external web site/service. I’d be very curious to see how these folks have (or have not) gotten around that requirement.
Thanks,
Dan
September 26th, 2007 at 12:37 pm
Hmm, right: No registration, no installation. But you don’t mention that you still need to “activate” the application to make use of it; and you still need to pester all your friends to “activate” it too; and that you can only communicate with people who activate it themselves.
This has got to be one of the most misleading posts I’ve read today!

I heard a rumour that facebook was dead? (well, ‘peaked’). Apparently they have less and less people signing up. I DO have an account, but I’ve actually never used it. The question is, how long will they last, and if they die, can we be sure that that delete everyones personal details? Go careful!
